Authenticity is a powerful word, loaded with implications. It's a word often associated with consumer Brands. Creators love the word, marketers shout it. Critics wield it like a sword. But most of us have an innate sense about what authenticity is, and what it is not. This week I saw an interesting new definition of “authenticity” when we convened our monthly SDSI Board meeting and embarked upon an examination of our business sector’s post covid “learnings.” The array of companies was wide…several Billion dollars in size to the far opposite. Many execs, big to little, outlined their “misread” of the 2023 consumer swing that has led to the nearly historic high inventories we have today It was electric and sobering, and cathartic. By the end of the meeting it was evident that a business community that can be this forthright in sharing decision making deserves the title “Authentic.” Parenthetically, we all went home plenty smarter as well!
