Olympics (July Newsletter)

Olympics
I am always reluctant to admit anything related to TV/streaming habits, but I gotta confess I have had my nose stuck to one screen or another watching the drama of the Paris Olympics unfold. Soccer, er football, archery, equestrian, basketball, womens’ basketball (!) track and field, gymnastics….so great to see the regimen that true world class athletes devote to their preparation, all play out before our very eyes.  Fantastic. Paris a preview of what we can expect when the LA Olympics arrive in 2028. Believe it or not, we are already feeling the pressure for venues, training spaces, hotels and athlete services from all around the world. The next 4 years will be an amazing on ramp for the San Diego sport community. Can’t wait!

Play Ball (March Newsletter)

Spring time is a great time for Team Sports…Mojo, Padres, Wave, Legion, Strike Force, Sharks, all kick off their season right now…Gulls, Seals, Sockers are mid-season or heading into playoffs…the Aztecs had an amazing run in the NCAA’s…lots of Sports, but FAR more to come. How can it be? When that other big pro team left San Diego, we were all assured we were a small market town, incapable of sustaining a national franchise. Peter Seidler did not get the memo: under his amazing leadership, the Padres put us back in the national spotlight and presented San Diego for what it is..an amazing place to live, and a very healthy place for the business of Sport. Opening Day at the Padres and the very touching celebration of Peter’s life, showcased the value of great Citizen-Owner leadership. We now have 12 professional sports teams, plus venues like Snapdragon, Petco, Pechanga (!) and the new Frontwave arena, and the Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista. The scene is set. The 2028 LA Olympics will drive an ever-increasing interest in sports and healthy living here in San Diego. Can’t wait!
