Give to Get (September Newsletter)

It's an old cliché, no doubt about it, but it's true. Giving without the expectation of getting is a virtue. For instance, Pat Kilkenny and his inspirational Lucky Duck Foundation is dedicated to helping homeless people find housing and safety tonight, not in 10 years. His personal commitment is admirable, free from any idea of personal gain, and a reminder that a principled life is the best life.
Generosity in business is rare. Last week 15 SDSI members made a “field trip” to Carmen Mirabella’s Fulex, a third party logistics company in Poway. 3PL’s provide warehousing and distribution services to a myriad of clients. We anticipated a tour of “how we do it,” and in fact, we did see why many companies are switching to 3PL's for fulfillment. But the tour came with a big surprise when one attendee asked “what's the ideal size client for Fulex?” Carmen responded, “we can handle about any mid-sized company here in San Diego, but what I love personally is helping new companies make a smart start. If they have minimum sales as a basis, we pride ourselves in helping young entrepreneurs get the basics of business right. Every time we help, and the client succeeds, all of us here at Fulex have the sense that we have helped make a dream come true for a young business. That’s is satisfying, that's what makes our day.” And that's what giving is all about, specially, in a business community. By the way, business is very good at Fulex. Thanks Carmen!
